Students wishing to undertake graduate or postgraduate studies at a British
university, will need to prove that their English is of a high enough level to
be able to complete the course. The level of English required varies from
one university to another, and also depends on the subject to be studied
(for example, a maths course will not entail the same linguistic requirements
as a literary course.) The following exams are the most widely accepted
as proof of a student’s language skills. However, it is vital to check with
your chosen university/ institute of higher education to ensure you meet
the correct entry criteria.

- Certificate of Attainment in English (Levels 4 to 6) - (EDEXCEL)
Skills tested: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking (optional).
- First Certificate in English - (UCLES)
Skills tested: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Candidates must
sit five papers. Required results: Grade A
- Certificate in Advanced English - (UCLES)
Skills tested: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Candidates must
sit five papers. Required results: Pass
- Certificate of Proficiency in English - (UCLES)
Skills tested: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Candidates must
sit five papers. Required results: Pass
- English for Speakers of Other Languages (Pitman Qualifications)
Higher Intermediate or Advanced Certificates. Skills tested: Reading,
Writing & Listening. Required results: Pass
- English for Business - (LCCIEB)
Level 3 Candidates must take the optional oral component, in addition to
the standard written papers.
- Higher Level Certificate - (ARELS and UODLE)
Both certificates are needed (one from ARELS and one from UODLE) in
order to test all four language skills. Required results: Pass in the ARELS
higher certificate and pass/ credit in the Oxford higher certificate.
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) -
(British Council/ UCLES/ International Development Program of Australian
Universities and Colleges.)
Exam specifically aimed at those wanting to study or train in the medium of
English. All four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) are
tested. Results are given in the form of a nine-band scale, with 9 indicating
the highest level of achievement.
The test can be taken both in the UK and world-wide, available according to
demand. Required results: Most common requirement is 6.0 or 6.5. However,
level depends on the institution in which you wish to study and the type of
course you will be taking.
- Test in English for Educational Purposes (TEEP) -
(University of Reading, Testing and Evaluation Unit)
For undergraduate or postgraduate students wishing to study at a UK
university. It tests English language proficiency in reading academic texts,
listening to lectures and writing on academic topics. Skills tested: Reading,
Writing, Listening and spoken English if requested. The test lasts 2 hours
(excluding the speaking section). It is available on the first Wednesday of
every term at Reading University or at other times on payment of a
surcharge.
- For students wishing to study at an American College or University:
A TOEFL
(Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 is widely accepted.
This test uses North American English and is computer-based. Many UK
universities will accept a TOEFL score of 580-600, plus proof of spoken
and written skills. The test costs approx. US $110 and can be taken at centres
