SERVICES, SCHOLARSHIPS AND FUNDING AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS

. Charles de Gaulle Bursary Scheme

  • Students aged 17 to 19 years old with a reasonable standard of French can spend a month in France working on a project of their choice.
  • Bursaries of up to £800 are available to carry out the student’s project or study programme.
  • Applications should be made by 31st January of each year and students should expect to be interviewed in March.

. English Language Assistants Programme

  • Generally aimed at undergraduates who need to spend a year in France as part of their course. (Recent graduates are also considered.)
  • Students teach English in a French school or college for one academic year.
  • Students will have enough time for private study and will also be paid.
  • Applications should arrive by 1st December of the year prior to the placement (31st January for Scotland)

. Comenius Assistant programme

  • Part of the EU Socrates programme.
  • Aimed at student teachers or students intending to teach as a career.
  • Assistants teach English in a school or college in France (or another EU or EEA country).
  • Placements last from 3 to 8 months between October and May.
  • Assistants receive an allowance.
  • Applications should arrive by 1st February each year, although vacancies can often be found at other times.

. IAESTE (International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience)

  • Aimed at degree level students studying science, technology, engineering or related fields.
  • Students undertake work related to their degree in a French company (or one of 60 other member countries on the scheme).
  • Students have to pay their own travel costs but are paid a salary by their employers.
  • Placements usually last for up to 3 months during the summer, although longer placements at other times in the year are available.
  • Applications should arrive during the autumn term.

. LEONARDO da Vinci Programme

  • Aims to help students undertake part of their initial vocational training in France (or another EU or EEA member state) through placements and exchanges.
  • Colleges or employers, rather than individuals, should apply (various dates throughout the year).

SERVICES AND FUNDING AIMED AT SCHOOLS & TEACHERS

. Teacher Exchange within Europe

  • Aimed at full-time modern language teachers working in secondary or further education.
  • Teachers exchange jobs for 3 weeks to 1 year with their French counterparts (or German, Austrian, Spanish or Swiss).
  • Exchanges can last for up to one year.
  • Teachers receive their full salary plus tax relief.
  • Applications should be made by mid February each year.

. Professional Development Courses: Modern Languages

  • Aimed at modern language teachers in secondary, further or adult education.
  • Courses last for 2 weeks in France (or Spain, Germany and Italy).
  • The programme covers language and contemporary life, with lectures, group work and projects aimed at developing the curriculum.
  • Courses are usually during Easter, summer or half-term holidays.
  • All costs are met and Lingua grants contribute to accommodation, travel and supply expenses.
  • Applications should be made by various deadlines during the year.

. School and Class Linking

  • Service to help either primary or secondary schools find a partner in France (or other countries).
  • Once a partner has been found, schools can exchange correspondence, work and visits.
  • Applications can be made at any time of year.

. School Linking Visits

  • Short trips designed to help English & Welsh schools form partnerships with schools in France (or other countries), or to develop their existing links with schools.
  • Open to teachers and head-teachers at all levels.
  • Funds of up to £500 are available to meet travel and other costs.
  • Applications should be made at least 6 weeks prior to the proposed visit.

. Lefèvre Trust

  • Bursaries of up to £5,000 are available for exchange visits for state secondary schools and colleges in the former ILEA boroughs.
  • The bursaries must be shared equally with the French partner school.
  • Applications made on behalf of disadvantaged children are given priority.
  • Schools can apply at any time of year, but at least 2 months in advance of the exchange.

. Vocational Training Links

  • Partner finding service for institutions of further and higher education, training organisations or companies seeking links in France, or other European countries.
